A delicious, yeast-risen
French onion and cheddar cheese bread.

Cheese Bread
- 1 (1/4-ounce) package
active dry yeast or 2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/2 cup water
3 cups all-purpose or bread flour
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon granulated sugar
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
2 tablespoons wheat germ
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon dried onion flakes
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 large egg
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed onion soup
- Soften yeast in water;
set aside.
- In a bowl combine the
yeast, flour, ginger, sugar, whole wheat flour, wheat germ, salt,
dried onion flakes, shredded cheddar cheese, egg, oil, and onion
soup (undiluted). Mix well; knead until smooth and satiny, about
10 minutes. Allow to rise, covered, in a warm place for 2 hours.
- Punch down, place in a
greased loaf pan, and allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about
1 hour.
- Bake at 350°F
(175°C) for 20 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
Makes 1 loaf.
