This dated ottoman leaps from dull to delightful as verdant vinyl gives way to purple plush and polka dots.

A throwback to the '70s, this sightly ottoman had seen better days. Luckily, designer Wendy Rieman Musgrave saw beyond its shortcomings and rescued the funky footstool with a new cover.

Take it Off. Musgrave carefully removed the original cover so she could use it as an approximate guide for a new one. She also replaced the worn foam and batting with new.

Colorful Coat. To assure a snug fit, Musgrave chose fabrics with a bit of stretch -- lightweight twill and denim in white and three shades of purple.

She cut and pieced squares from the different fabrics so when sewn together in a strip they fit around the top third of the ottoman. For the bottom two-thirds she cut a rectangle from lavender fabric to the same length as the pieced strip and added an extra 4 inches to the width for wrapping underneath

the ottoman. With right sides together, she sewed the pieced strip and lavender rectangle together lengthwise, then sewed the ends together to form a tube.

Top it Off. For the top, Musgrave traced the circumference of the ottoman, added 1/2 inch for a seam allowance, and cut a circle that size from purple fabric. With right sides together, she sewed the circle to the pieced tube, clipping the seam allowance around the curve when finished.
Finishing Touches. Musgrave re-covered the old button with white fabric and hand-stitched it securely in place centered on the top. She finished the ottoman by cutting a cardboard circle a bit smaller than the ottoman's circumference and stapling it to the bottom.

Quick Tips

  • To complete the look, make small throw pillows from matching fabrics and more iron-on circles.
  • Use your ottoman for more than just a footrest. It can provide an extra seat when entertaining or serve as a snack table during movie night.
