Who would know an ordinary folding chair hides beneath this cover? Two flat pieces of fabric sewn together are held to the chair with ribbon ties.

What You Need:

  • 54-inch-wide medium-weight fabric (the amount will vary with the size of your chair)
  • Straightedge or ruler
  • 5-1/2 yards of 5/8-inch-wide grosgrain ribbon (may be different colors)

Instructions:

1. To determine the size of the main panel, start at the back of the chair and measure the length from the floor over the back, to the floor. Add 4 inches for hems.

2. For the width of the main panel, measure the width of the chair seat and add 8 inches for hems. Cut out the main panel.

3. For the side panel, start at one side and measure across the seat from floor to seat to floor. Add 4 inches for hems. For the width, measure the depth of the chair seat and add 8 inches. Cut out the side panel.

3. Fuse the paper-backed fusible webbing to the contrasting monogram fabric. Trace the letter onto fabric and cut out. Peel off the backing and center the letter on the seat. Fuse it in place according to the manufacturer's directions. If you wish, sew around the appliquý with a narrow tight zigzag (satin stitch) to hold it in place.

4. Press under 4 inches on each side and pin in place. On the short side of each piece, turn under 1 inch twice and pin.

5. Center the side panel over the chair seat. Place the main panel over the chair. Pin the side and main panels together along the chair edge. Check the hem lengths of the side edges and make adjustments.

6. Topstitch the side panels to the main panel. Topstitch the edges and hems. Place the cover over the chair. Cut the ribbon into 8 pairs of 12-inch-long ties. Tack the ties in place and tie the cover to the seat.
