U.S. Native
A North American native, creeping juniper is a dense, low-spreading
shrub that grows 1 to 2 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide. It's
a tough plant, tolerating heat and drought well. With its silvery
blue-green needle-like foliage that turns purple in winter, it
makes an impressive ground cover and provides useful erosion
control in the landscape, especially near beaches -- it tolerates
salt well.
Notable Varieties
- 'Bar Harbor' grows 6 to 8 inches
tall and has blue-green foliage in summer that turns purplish
in winter.
- 'Douglasii' produces blue-green
foliage that turns silvery blue in winter on 6- to 8-inch-tall
plants.
- 'Wiltonii' is a fine ground
cover with blue-green foliage.
Care
Creeping juniper does best in full sun and tolerates less-fertile,
acidic, and alkaline soil types. Mulch to control weeds and keep
well-weeded once plant is established. Trim back long branches
to control spread as needed.
