A delicious, yeast-risen French onion and cheddar cheese bread.

French-Onion Cheese Bread

1 (1/4-ounce) package active dry yeast or 2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/2 cup water
3 cups all-purpose or bread flour
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon granulated sugar
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
2 tablespoons wheat germ
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon dried onion flakes
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 large egg
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed onion soup
  1. Soften yeast in water; set aside.
  2. In a bowl combine the yeast, flour, ginger, sugar, whole wheat flour, wheat germ, salt, dried onion flakes, shredded cheddar cheese, egg, oil, and onion soup (undiluted). Mix well; knead until smooth and satiny, about 10 minutes. Allow to rise, covered, in a warm place for 2 hours.
  3. Punch down, place in a greased loaf pan, and allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
  4. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown.

Makes 1 loaf.
