Brownies with Broiled Coconut Frosting
A creamy white layer of frosting covers these dark chocolate brownies, while a quick turn under the broiler just toasts the coconut. It's amazing what a difference broiling makes in this simple and delicious dessert.
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine, cut into pieces
2 tablespoons water
1 (8-ounce) box NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Bars, broken into pieces
2 large eggs
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups sweetened flaked coconut
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
1/4 cup NESTLÉ® CARNATION® Evaporated Milk
- For Brownies: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease 13x9x2-inch baking pan.
- Heat, stirring constantly, sugar, butter and water in large, heavy-duty saucepan just to boiling. Remove from heat. Add baking bars; stir until melted. Stir in eggs one at a time. Add flour, vanilla extract, baking soda and salt; stir well. Spread into prepared baking pan.
- Bake for 16 to 20 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out slightly sticky. Cool in pan for 20 minutes.
- For Coconut Frosting: Combine coconut, brown sugar, butter and evaporated milk in medium bowl. Spread over cooled brownies. Broil 4-inches from heat for 3 to 4 minutes or until golden brown.
