A German chocolate cake mix and a jar of caramel puts the good and easy in these cookie bars.

Easy German Chocolate Bars

1 (18.25-ounce) package German chocolate cake mix
1 cup butter, softened - divided use
1 large egg
1 (12-ounce) jar caramel sauce
1/2 cup evaporated milk
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, half the butter and egg. Stir until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal. Reserve 1 cup and set aside. Press remaining mixture into prepared pan. Bake for 10 minutes or until just set.
  3. Meanwhile, combine caramel sauce with remaining butter. Heat over low heat until butter is melted. Stir in evaporated milk and pour over baked crust. Sprinkle with reserved cake mixture. Bake for 25 minutes, or until set. Cool on a wire rack.

Makes 12 bars.
