Grain drinks of all types are popular throughout
Latin America. Inspired by Olga from Virginia, this unique recipe
for hot chocolate uses oats and is creamy and delicious with
a hint of cinnamon, the perfect way to warm up on a chilly autumn
or winter day.
Olga's
Hot Chocolate Oatmeal Drink
- 4 cups 1% milk
1 bunch (about a handful or 1/2 cup tightly packed) fresh mint
sprigs, washed and patted dry
4 envelopes Rich Chocolate Flavor NESTLÉ Hot Cocoa Mix
- Place water and oats in
blender container; cover. Blend for 30 seconds. Strain mixture
through fine mesh strainer into medium saucepan. Discard solids.
- Add evaporated milk, sugar,
cinnamon sticks and nutmeg to saucepan. Cook on medium-low heat,
stirring constantly, until mixture lightly coats the back of
a spoon (about 25 to 30 minutes). Remove from heat and remove
cinnamon sticks.
- Stir in Nesquik with wire
whisk until well blended. If necessary, additional warmed evaporated
milk or water can be added for a thinner consistency. Serve hot
with grilled ham and cheese sandwiches or arepas.
Makes 5 servings.
