A hearty yeast bread loaded
with diced cubes of cheddar cheese and ham. A slice of this is
almost like having half a ham and cheese on rye sandwich! Especially
delicious toasted!
Ham
'n Cheese 'n Rye Bread
- 1 (1/4-ounce) package
active dry yeast or 2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 3/4 cups warm water
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon granulated sugar
2 1/2 cups all-purpose or bread flour
1 1/2 cups rye flour
1 tablespoon wheat germ
2 teaspoons mustard seed
2 teaspoons caraway seed
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup diced cheddar cheese
1 cup ham, diced
- Dissolve yeast in warm
water.
- In a bowl combine ginger,
sugar, flour, rye flour, wheat germ, mustard seeds, caraway seed,
salt, and oil. Stir in the yeast mixture and knead to form a
soft dough. Add diced cheddar cheese and diced ham. Place in
a greased bowl, turning once to coat, cover, and allow to rise
until doubled; about 1 1/2 hours.
- Punch down; form in a
greased loaf pan, and allow to rise again; about 1 hour.
- Bake at 350°F
(175°C) for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the top is browned.
Makes 1 loaf.
